Journey to Primo VE: From Past to Future at University of Miami

ELUNA Annual Conference · Minneapolis, Minnesota

In May 2024, I presented Journey to Primo VE: From Past to Future at University of Miami at the ELUNA Annual Conference, together with Eduardo N. Prieto and Melia Jean-Baptiste. We shared the University of Miami Libraries' experience migrating from Primo Back Office to Primo VE.

ELUNA 2024 Annual Meeting, Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 14–17
ELUNA 2024 Annual Meeting · Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Our presentation covered the decision to undertake the migration in 2023 and the main stages of the project. One of our goals was to simplify the administration and configuration of Primo and Alma while taking advantage of Primo VE's features, including unified management of both systems, real-time discovery of records managed in Alma, and simpler publishing workflows.

We discussed the migration and configuration process, including authentication, search views and profiles, import profiles, and especially the adaptation of normalization rules and local fields that we had developed over the years in Primo Back Office. Some of these configurations had to be migrated and adapted to Primo VE's structure.

We also shared some of the issues we encountered after the migration, including normalization rules and search scopes, redirects and permanent links, thumbnails, and the implementation of Syndetics Unbound.

Overall, the migration took approximately three months. It allowed us to work with a unified interface integrated with Alma and make configuration changes in real time.
