In October 2025, my colleague Kristina Yost and I presented our poster, Empowering Cataloging Through AI: Practical Solutions and Explorations from the University of Miami Libraries, at the SEFLIN Annual Conference in Miami.

The poster brought together several AI experiments we had been working on at the University of Miami Libraries to explore practical applications in cataloging and metadata. These included generating abstracts for more than 1,000 marine science theses, standardizing item descriptions in Alma, comparing different AI tools for creating bibliographic records, and testing Arabic transliteration.
Rather than presenting AI as an automatic solution, we wanted to share both its possibilities and its limitations. Some of our experiments showed promising results, but we also encountered challenges involving accuracy, quality, access, and working with different languages.
For us, the main takeaway was clear: these tools can support and streamline certain tasks, but catalogers' expertise and human review remain essential to ensuring metadata quality.
