On May 6, Kristina Yost and I presented AI in Action: Practical Experiments in Cataloging at the University of Miami Libraries at the 2026 Southeastern Conference (SEC) AI Library Summit.

During the presentation, we shared some of the experiments we have been conducting at the University of Miami Libraries to explore how artificial intelligence can support cataloging and metadata work. We discussed several practical projects, including generating abstracts for more than 1,000 marine science theses, standardizing item descriptions, testing different AI tools to create bibliographic records, and experimenting with Arabic transliteration.
An important part of our presentation was sharing not only what worked, but also what didn't. Our goal is not to use AI to replace catalogers' expertise, but to explore tasks where it can help us work more efficiently while maintaining human review and professional standards.
